How a pan-African company unified employee recognition across 6 markets on one platform
A financial services group with operations in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Uganda, Rwanda, and Côte d'Ivoire had no consistent employee recognition approach. Each country operated differently — some paid cash bonuses manually, others used generic global vouchers that local employees couldn't spend.

The situation
The group's HR Director had a consistent challenge: recognition programmes that worked for employees in the Nigerian head office didn't translate to the Ugandan or Côte d'Ivoire teams. Global HR platforms the group had evaluated were designed for North American workforces — their reward catalogues, delivery mechanisms, and pricing models didn't fit African market realities.
Manual approaches were inconsistent across countries. The Nigeria team processed spot recognition payments through payroll — slow and administratively heavy. The Kenya team used a mix of supermarket vouchers and cash. Côte d'Ivoire had no formal recognition programme at all. New hire welcome packs were ordered ad hoc by each country manager.
The HR Director needed a single platform that could handle spot recognition, service awards, and new hire gifting — across all 6 markets simultaneously, in local currency, with a delivery method that worked for every employee regardless of phone type or bank account status.
The programme
Qifts Recognition was configured for all 6 markets in a single setup session. Each market was configured with its local currency, preferred delivery method, and reward catalogue — NGN airtime and grocery vouchers in Nigeria, M-Pesa in Kenya, MoMo in Ghana, MTN mobile money in Uganda and Rwanda, and Orange Money in Côte d'Ivoire.
Single HR dashboard covering all 6 markets — one view of all recognition activity and spend
Managers in any country can issue spot recognition in their local currency within 30 seconds
Service award milestones automated — 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year rewards trigger without HR intervention
New hire welcome gift issued automatically on first day — configured per market
All employees reachable — mobile money and airtime delivery works for employees without bank accounts
First rewards issued 72 hours after the platform was configured and employee data imported
The results
For the first time, the group's HR Director had a single view of recognition activity across all 6 markets. Manager-initiated spot recognition increased significantly once the delivery friction was removed — managers who previously avoided recognition because of the manual process now issued rewards regularly.
Service award misses — a frequent source of employee dissatisfaction in the previous manual system — were eliminated. Every anniversary milestone triggered automatically, with no HR team member required to track or process them.
The Côte d'Ivoire team, which had no recognition programme before, reported the highest manager participation rate of any market in the first quarter — suggesting that the absence of a programme had been a constraint on manager recognition behaviour rather than a reflection of cultural differences in recognition practices.
